The New Zealand Ministry of Health and Auckland University have released an alarming new health report stating that 11,000 deaths per year could be avoided, simply by improving diet and lifestyle factors. The number one risk factor for premature death is tobacco smoking, which kills 5000 people every year, followed closely by high cholesterol levels, which account for an avoidable 4700 New Zealanders dying each year.
Cholesterol Manager is a nutraceutical containing phytosterols from the conifer tree. These are plant compounds with a very similar chemical structure to cholesterol. Phytosterols are able to block the absorption of dietary cholesterol, reducing LDL cholesterol levels by up to 24% over a period of 4-8 weeks.
Now The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has released a study that shows plant sterols may lower cholesterol as much as cholesterol-lowering medications (statins). After just four weeks, the low-fat diet with added plant sterol esters and fibre led to a 28.6 percent decrease in `bad' low-density lipoprotein (LDL) form of cholesterol. Those taking statins had a 30.9 percent reduction.
Supplementation of plant sterols may be an option in lowering cholesterol for those who prefer not to take cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins. Thompson's Cholesterol Manager can be taken safely alongside any pharmaceutical medications. These plant compounds have been tested extensively at much greater than the recommended dosage without any of the adverse effects.
